Pre-Tow Safety Checklist

1. Weights & Ratings

Payload checkedConfirm passengers, cargo, hitch hardware and tongue or pin weight fit within available payload.

GVWR checkedLoaded tow vehicle weight should remain within the exact vehicle GVWR.

GCWR / combined weight checkedCompare the loaded truck and trailer combination against the vehicle's GCWR where applicable.

Hitch, axle and tire ratings checkedVerify that the receiver, hitch, axles and tires are not being asked to carry more than their ratings.

2. Hitch & Connections

Coupler or fifth-wheel connection fully lockedVisually verify the latch, jaws or locking mechanism rather than relying only on feel.

Safety chains crossed and securedChains should be attached to proper points with enough slack for turns but not dragging.

Breakaway cable connected correctlyAttach it independently from the safety chains and verify it will not bind during turns.

Electrical plug fully seatedCheck the 7-way or other trailer connector for a secure connection and damaged wiring.

Weight-distribution hitch set correctlyIf used, confirm spring bars, brackets and setup are installed per the hitch manufacturer's instructions.

3. Tires, Wheels & Brakes

Truck and trailer tire pressures verified coldUse the proper cold inflation pressure for the vehicle, tire and loading situation.

Tires inspected for damage or abnormal wearLook for cuts, bulges, cracking, uneven wear and objects in the tread.

Lug nuts and wheel condition checkedFollow the trailer or wheel manufacturer's torque and re-torque guidance.

Brake controller testedConfirm trailer brakes respond and the controller is adjusted appropriately for the load and conditions.

4. Lights, Cargo & Departure

Running lights, brake lights and turn signals testedHave a helper confirm every required light functions before departure.

Cargo secured and weight accounted forSecure loose items and remember that water, propane, batteries and gear all add weight.

Doors, hatches, awnings, steps and jacks securedWalk around the entire trailer and verify every exterior item is travel-ready.

Mirrors adjusted and route clearance consideredConfirm visibility and account for trailer height, width, length and turning clearance.

Final 360° walk-around completeDo one last lap around the rig immediately before moving.
