Fifth-wheel pin weight explained

Pin weight is carried by the truck, so it uses payload and adds load to the truck's axles. For many fifth-wheel combinations, that becomes the limit before advertised tow capacity does.

What pin weight is

A fifth-wheel trailer transfers part of its loaded weight vertically into the truck bed through the hitch. That supported portion is pin weight. The rest of the trailer weight remains on the trailer axles.

Why pin weight matters so much

Pin weight is not separate from truck payload. It shares the truck's available payload with passengers, tools, cargo, the hitch itself and other accessories. A truck can have enough engine and drivetrain capacity to pull the trailer while still running out of payload or rear axle capacity.

Use loaded weight, not just dry numbers

Brochure dry pin weight is based on an unloaded trailer configuration. Once batteries, propane, water and cargo are added, both trailer weight and balance can change. The loaded pin percentage may also differ from the dry percentage.

Example

If a fifth-wheel is loaded to 12,000 lb and carries 20% of that weight on the pin, estimated pin weight is 2,400 lb. Add a 200 lb hitch, 450 lb of passengers and 250 lb of truck-bed cargo, and the truck is carrying about 3,300 lb before any other items are counted.

What to compare it against

Check the exact truck's payload rating, GVWR, rear axle rating, tire ratings and fifth-wheel hitch rating. A comfortable margin under one number does not compensate for exceeding another.
